About Full Spectrum Doula Support

While there’s not yet a cohesive definition for this work, the general understanding is that a ‘full spectrum doula’ provides doula support for any pregnancy outcome, rather than just birth, including adoption, miscarriage, stillbirth, and abortion.  Often the definition also includes groups that provide doula services for the full spectrum of populations, such as impoverished mothers, incarcerated mothers, survivors of abuse/assault, and teens.

Directory of Full Spectrum Doula Groups

This directory lists groups that self-identify as ‘full spectrum.’

The Doula Project – New York, NY

The Doula Project is an NYC-based organization that provides free compassionate care and emotional, physical, and informational support to people across the spectrum of pregnancy.  The Doula Project works to create a society in which all pregnant people have access to the care and support they need during their pregnancies and the ability to make healthy decisions for themselves, whether they face birth, miscarriage, stillbirth, fetal anomaly, or abortion.

Full Spectrum Doulas – Seattle, WA

Full Spectrum Doulas is a growing collective of doulas and reproductive justice advocates who are working throughout the Pacific Northwest to bring the doula model of care to people across the full spectrum of pregnancy experiences, including abortion, adoption, surrogacy, miscarriage and stillbirth.

Open Umbrella Collective – Asheville, NC

We are a volunteer-based organization located in Asheville, NC.  We believe that pregnant people are the experts in their processes.  We are working towards creating a world in which all pregnant people are provided emotional, physical, and informational support regardless of the course their pregnancy takes – whether it be birth, miscarriage, stillbirth, fetal anomaly, or abortion.

Kaleidoscope Doula Care – Chicago, IL

At Kaleidoscope Doula Care, we are committed to providing doula support for ALL pregnant people and are especially excited to work with teens, LBTQ, and surrogates for gay families. At Kaleidoscope Doula Care, we value and trust women across the spectrum of pregnancy, recognizing the power and importance of doula support. Because of this, we also proudly offer abortion doula care.

Spectrum Doula Collective – Piedmont Triad, NC

The Spectrum Doula Collective is a central NC-based project that aims to provide compassionate care to any person experiencing any pregnancy outcome.  We are committed to helping facilitate the pregnant person’s process as defined by them through our continued emotional, physical, and informational support.  Abortion doulas, adoption doulas, birth doulas, postpartum doulas, and doulas who specialize in compassionate care during miscarriage and stillbirth.

Purple Lotus Doulas – St. Louis, MO

We are a collective of birth professionals who strive to provide knowledgeable and compassionate doula services to women of diverse socio-economic backgrounds, races, ethnicities, ages, belief systems, sexual orientations, ability and health statuses, family structures, and birth choices in the greater St. Louis and South Central Illinois region.

Freedom Doula Project – Massachusetts

The Freedom Doula Project provides nonjudgmental, compassionate, and empowering support to women through the full spectrum of their reproductive experiences, including abortion, birth, adoption, and unintended pregnancy loss. In doing so, we strive to foster a culture that trust women and their inherent strength to make the best reproductive decisions for themselves.

D.C. Doulas for Choice – Washington, DC

We are a group of pro-choice doulas who believe that women seeking abortions may desire and benefit from the same type of patient-centered, non-judgmental physical and emotional support  that doulas traditionally provide to women in labor and during birth.  In particular, we seek to recognize the multiple barriers to quality reproductive health services facing women of all backgrounds, but especially women of color, low-income women, youth, and LGBT-identified people.

Prison Birth Project – Western Massachusetts

We provide Doula care to women incarcerated at Western Mass Regional Women’s Correctional Center through transitional programs and after release. As Doulas we assist these women through the entire process of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum as well as provide childbirth education. We provide services not only to incarcerated people, but also to people in recovery on the outside who have identified they are at risk of losing custody of their child/children.

Bay Area Doula Project – San Francisco, CA

We are an emerging group of doulas in the Bay Area who are committed to supporting pregnant women who are choosing abortion, and other pregnancy outcomes.  Most of us are birth doulas, many of us are postpartum doulas as well.  All of us are abortion doulas.  We trust women to make their own decisions regarding their pregnancies, and offer unconditional support to women in need.

Chicago Doula Circle – Chicago, IL

The mission of Chicago Doula Circle is to increase access and provide emotional, physical, physical and educational support to people who are choosing to terminate their pregnancies, have miscarried, or experienced fetal loss.

  1. Hello! I’m wondering if you might be able to add our “currently forming” doula project to the list- we’re a group of full-spectrum doulas operating out of Wesleyan University to serve the central & Southern Connecticut area.

Contact: Hannah Cressy and Kelsey Henry
